We drive out to shelters that run out of room, load up the dogs and cats nobody claimed, and hand them to a foster family the same afternoon. Then we wait for the right people to come find them.

Who we are
Second Chance Tails Rescue works with county shelters across northeast Iowa that have more animals than kennels. When a euthanasia list goes out, we answer it. Animals ride back with us, get seen by our vet partner within 48 hours, and go straight into a foster home instead of another cage.
Foster families tell us the things a kennel card never could: that he sleeps under the coffee table, that she is fine with the cat but not with the vacuum, that he needs a fenced yard and a person who is home by five. That is what makes an adoption stick.
Three ways in
Every animal on our list is already vetted, vaccinated, microchipped, and living in a home. You will know their habits before you ever fill out a form.
See who is available
You provide the couch and the routine. We cover food, crates, vet care, and the 9pm phone calls when something seems off. Two weeks or six months, both help.
Start an application
Donations pay the vet bill, the transport fuel, and the heartworm treatment that makes an older dog adoptable. We publish where it goes each quarter.

Nothing here is complicated. It just has to happen fast, and someone has to answer the phone.
A shelter manager sends us names and a deadline. We confirm what we can take that week based on open foster beds, never more.
Exam, vaccines, spay or neuter, microchip, and treatment for whatever the shelter did not have budget to catch. Medical records travel with the animal.
Two weeks of house living tells us more than two months of kennel notes. Fosters write the profile you read on the adopt page.
You meet in the foster's living room or at our adoption lounge. If it clicks, the adoption is finished that day and we check in at week one and month three.
